Most injuries in ridden horses are not accidents. They are the visible end of a process that has been running for weeks — load arriving slightly faster than tissue can adapt to it, over and over, until something gives. Which is the uncomfortable part, and also the useful part: a process that builds slowly can be interrupted.

Training places repeated mechanical load on muscles, tendons and ligaments. That stress is necessary — it is the stimulus that builds strength. But it only builds strength when it is followed by enough recovery for the body to complete the repair. Prevention is not about training less. It is about keeping load and adaptation in the same rhythm.

What happens

What happens in the body during training

During exercise, muscles, tendons and ligaments absorb mechanical stress and small amounts of microscopic strain develop in the tissue. The body responds by repairing what was strained and reinforcing the structures involved. Over time, this is how a horse becomes stronger and more durable in its work.

When recovery is insufficient, or when training intensity rises faster than the tissue can adapt, the repair process cannot keep up with the load. The imbalance shows first as inflammation and tissue fatigue, and later as an overuse injury with a name and a rehabilitation plan attached to it.

Strength is built by load. It is only kept by recovery.

How training-related injuries develop

Many equine injuries develop gradually rather than suddenly. Repetitive strain and accumulated load weaken tissue structures quietly. These are the factors that appear most often when you work backwards from an injury.

Where the balance tips

The same training can produce three completely different outcomes, depending only on what follows it.

01 — Adaptation

Load arrives, strain develops, repair completes, the tissue rebuilds slightly stronger. The horse feels better in its work over a period of weeks. This is training working exactly as intended.

02 — Accumulation

Load arrives again before repair has finished. Nothing looks wrong yet, but the deficit carries forward: longer warm-ups, lingering soreness, legs that fill after work. This is the window where prevention is still cheap.

03 — Breakdown

Tissue tolerance is exceeded and the injury becomes clinical — a strained tendon, an inflamed joint, a back that will not settle. The cost is now measured in months, and often in a return to work that never quite reaches the previous level.

Almost every horse spends time in stage two. The question is whether anyone notices before stage three.

Four strategies that reduce injury risk

None of these are new, and none of them require a change of discipline or a new facility. They require a plan that is written down and followed when the weather is bad and the season is short.

Progressive loading

Tissue needs time to adapt. Gradual increases in workload let muscles, tendons and ligaments strengthen safely. Sudden increases in intensity — a jump in frequency, a harder surface, a competition block with no build-up — are one of the most reliable predictors of overuse injury.

Variation in training

Repetitive strain is a common cause of injury, and repetition is easy to fall into when you are working toward a specific goal. Varying exercises, surfaces and intensity distributes mechanical load across different structures instead of loading the same tissue in the same direction every day.

A proper warm-up

A structured warm-up increases circulation and prepares muscles and tendons for mechanical load. It also does something less obvious: it is the most reliable moment in the day to notice stiffness or asymmetry, because the horse is moving and you are paying attention.

A controlled cool-down

Cooling down supports circulation and helps clear the metabolic byproducts produced during exercise. Ending work gradually rather than abruptly gives the body a transition into the recovery phase, where the actual adaptation takes place.

LED treatment supports the natural processes involved in recovery and tissue maintenance. It does not prevent injuries on its own, and it does not replace sound training management, good farriery or veterinary care. It is a complement to proper load management — not a substitute for it.

Common questions

How quickly can I increase a horse's training load?

Slower than most programmes assume. Tissue adapts over weeks, not sessions, and tendon and ligament adapt more slowly than muscle — so a horse can feel fit long before its connective tissue has caught up. Increase one variable at a time and hold it long enough to see how the horse responds.

What are the earliest warning signs of an overuse injury?

A warm-up that keeps getting longer, mild stiffness at the start of work, soreness that lingers into the next session, legs that fill overnight, or a subtle asymmetry between left and right. Individually these are unremarkable. Together, over a fortnight, they are a pattern worth acting on.

Does LED treatment prevent injuries?

No single measure prevents injuries. LED treatment supports the recovery and tissue-maintenance processes that determine how well a horse absorbs training load, which is one part of the picture — alongside progressive loading, variation, surfaces, farriery and veterinary care.
