Recovery in horses
Training gets the attention. Recovery decides how long the training can continue. Every session places repeated strain on muscles, joints, tendons and ligaments, and the horse does not get stronger during the work — it gets stronger in the hours afterwards, when the body repairs what the work disturbed. Recovery is where adaptation actually happens.
When recovery keeps pace with load, tissue strengthens and the horse stays comfortable in work. When it falls behind, the deficit accumulates quietly: stiffness that takes longer to walk out, a warm-up that stretches from ten minutes to twenty, performance that plateaus for no obvious reason. None of it looks like an injury. All of it is the same signal.
What recovery actually does
During exercise, muscle fibres and connective structures absorb mechanical stress and small amounts of microscopic strain develop. Afterwards the body clears metabolic byproducts, restores circulation through the working tissue, repairs the strained fibres and rebuilds them slightly stronger than before. That process needs time, blood flow and energy at the cellular level.
Recovery is not only physical, either. Horses that come back from travel, competition or an intense block of work also need to come down — and a horse that stays wound up recovers less well than one that settles. This is why routine matters more than any single intervention: the body reads consistency, not effort.
A horse does not get stronger during work. It gets stronger during the recovery that follows it.
Signs recovery is falling behind
None of these are dramatic on their own. Two or three together, over a fortnight, are worth acting on before they become a reason to stop work altogether.

The three recovery windows
Recovery is not one moment. It is three, and each asks for something different.
The cool-down. Circulation is still elevated and the body is clearing the byproducts of work. Walking, easing the horse down gradually rather than stopping abruptly, and supporting circulation through the muscles that did the work all belong here.
Repair and rebuilding. This is where most of the adaptation happens, and where a daily routine earns its keep. Turnout, movement, consistent care of the areas that carry the most load — done every day, not only after the hard days.
Cumulative strain. Competition, travel and consecutive training blocks add up in a way that no single session reveals. Planned lighter weeks, and a recovery routine that does not lapse when the diary gets busy, protect the whole season.
The horses that stay sound are rarely the ones that recover hardest. They are the ones that recover most consistently.
Building a routine that survives a busy week
The best recovery routine is the one that still happens on the evening you are late, cold and have two more horses to do. Build for that evening, not for the ideal one.
Cool down properly. Ending work gradually supports circulation and gives you a last look at how the horse is moving.
Attach the routine to something that already happens — untacking, evening feed — so it needs no decision.
Treat the areas that carried the load today, not a fixed list. Five to ten minutes per area is enough.
Keep movement in the recovery day. Turnout and hacking do more for circulation than a day standing in.
Write down what you notice. Patterns over weeks are visible in a notebook and invisible in memory.
How LED treatment supports recovery

Act largely from the outside and on the surface. Cold therapy manages heat and acute swelling; compression manages fill; rest removes load. All three are about limiting or managing the response to work.
Well established, widely used, and the right answer in acute situations — particularly in the first days after an injury.

It is not a cure, it does not replace rest, sound training management or veterinary care, and it will not compensate for a training load the horse cannot carry. Common questions
How long does a horse need to recover after hard work?
Most of the repair after a demanding session happens across the following 24 to 72 hours, but the exact need depends on the horse, the work and the season. The more useful question is whether the horse arrives at the next session as fresh as it left the last one — if not, recovery is running behind the load.
Is a day off the same as recovery?
Not quite. A day standing in a stable removes load but also removes the movement and circulation that repair depends on. Turnout, hacking and light movement generally support recovery better than complete inactivity, unless your vet has advised otherwise.
When should LED treatment be used — before or after work?
Both are useful for different reasons. Before work it supports circulation and suppleness as tissue prepares to load; after work it supports the recovery processes that follow. Typical sessions are five to ten minutes per treatment area.
Can LED treatment be used every day?
Yes — it is non-invasive, non-thermal and drug free, and daily use is where the value lies. A short session that happens consistently does more than an intensive block that stops. If your horse is being treated for a specific condition, follow your vet's guidance on frequency.
